A lot of care tips also cross over with safety measures that should be followed, meaning that you’re caring for your winch every time you use it safely. As you check over your cable to make sure there is no dust, debris or mud in the drum, you’re helping to care for your winch. Similarly, following instructions like making sure there's a weighted winch sail on the line will prevent major damage to the machine.

Preventative Maintenance of Winches

It’s always better to care than repair! Preventative maintenance and regular care is the best way to keep the quality up and cut back on expensive repair work.

Some key things you should be doing as preventative care include:

• Checking for kinks, fraying or any damage to the cable before and after use.
• Make sure the cable is dry and clean with no dust or debris.
• Ensure the cable is neatly and evenly spooled onto the drum after every use.
• Regularly check the electrical connections every few months to make sure they’re clean and in good working condition with no dirt caught up in there.
• Frequently check the mounting bolts to make sure they’re tight and sturdy.

Winch Servicing

The amount you need to service your winch depends on how frequently you use it. If you’re using your winch for industrial work, construction or regular work; a scheduled 6-12 monthly service will ensure everything is kept working perfectly.
